The Conservation and Landscape Ecology Group at the ANU's Fenner School of Environment and Society has established seven large-scale longitudinal field studies in south eastern Australia (see map for locations). In addition to the six field studies, an overarching ecological synthesis project is building links and broad themes between the projects.
1. Victorian Central Highlands Forest Management
Study
This project is set in native montane ash forests in Victoria with sites stratified across different age classes and disturbance histories.
Major theme: forest management and ecology
2. Tumut Fragmentation Study
Compares pine plantations, native forest fragments and continuous native forests in and around a pine plantation near Tumut, NSW.
Major theme: habitat fragmentation around plantations
3. Nanangroe Natural Experiment
Monitors how biodiversity in remnant vegetation is effected as the grazing country is converted to pine plantation (east of Gundagai in southern NSW).
Major theme: changing agricultural landscapes
4. Riverina Restoration Study
This investigation is all about understanding restoration and revegetation on farms in the Riverina area of NSW.
Major theme: habitat restoration on farms
5. Biodiversity Baseline Monitoring Study
Establishing baseline and future monitoring of flora and fauna presence and abundance in the Murray Catchment Management Area and improving incentive delivery schemes and management.
6. Jervis Bay Fire Response Study
Examines the effect of fire on wildlife at Booderee National Park, Jervis Bay. Major theme: Impacts of fire on biodiversity
7. Goorooyaroo Study
This study is all about woodland management and the response to various management actions such as fire, grazing exclusion, addition of woody debris and feral animal exclusion in a Canberra nature reserve.
Major theme: habitat enhancement in woodlands and nature reserves
8. Ecological synthesis
An overarching project building links and broad themes between the major projects above.
